The Kawhia Kai Festival on 6 February will see visitors lining up for such delicacies as Toroi (marinated mussels and pûhâ), Înanga (Whitebait patties), or traditional hangi, while others will be looking for Kânga Pirau (fermented corn), decidedly an acquired taste. For the less adventurous, there will also be Pûhâ and pork spring rolls, Pâwhara (smoked fish and eel) as well as the local Waikato delicacy - Kôkî (shark liver pate). Of the 50 stalls at this year's event, 25 will be offering food and five local marae will be selling the ever-popular hangi at the Festival, which celebrates Waitangi Day. The expected 10,000-plus crowd will be offered a full day of entertainment, from headline act Moana and The Tribe, kapahaka groups and others across two stages. Kâwhia is west of Hamilton, and gates open at 9.15am with entry $5 for adults and a 2A4C family pass $15.
