First waka wedding

A British couple has become the first couple in New Zealand to get married on a waka. Gaynor Halpin and Barry Gounds were married on the Styx River in Christchurch last week in a ceremony arranged for them by Katoro Maori Journeys and New Zealand Dream Weddings. According to a report in The Press, proceedings began with a traditional Maori powhiri and haka. Afterwards the bride and groom were escorted onto the waka called Te Kowhai. Maori warriors paddled the pair out onto the river and were married while on board.
