Record waka fleet for Waitangi Day 2010
Arrangements are being made to receive the largest fleet of waka in recorded history at the Waitangi Day celebrations on 6 February 10. The waka fleet, mostly from Northland and the Waikato area, is expected to exceed the 1990 record, when 23 craft took part in the sesquicentennial celebrations attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
In other news, work is under way on a series of improvements at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The $5 million-plus programme includes renovation of the existing 27-year-old Visitor Centre, and design and construction of a new reception building and a wellappointed new bathroom block. The restoration and preservation work includes reroofing and renovation of the waka shelter. The improvements will be finished for this summer season.
